Day of the Dead

Mandela is Dead

live_mandelaThe birdbath was frozen this morning.  The glass railing around my deck coated in frost.  Nelson Mandela is dead.  He passed away yesterday at 95, and the whole world mourns.

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

The student instructor who I work with, from Swaziland, lent me the autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom (now a movie), a few weeks ago, so I was up to date on Mandela’s life.  He was an incredible man.  That any of us could hold a candle to him.

Día de Muertos

Would it be appropriate here to insert some of my photos from the Tucson the Día de Muertos parade, Sunday, November 3?  I took these photos over a month ago, but haven’t gotten into blogging. People sing and dance as they pay tribute to Nelson Mandela in Soweto today.  Our All Souls Procession had mournful music, with an underlying slow drum beat.

Deer

deer 015This also written a month ago:  Let me amend a  previous blog where I thought that “my” fawn had been downed by a coyote.  Not true.  Here it is browsing in my neighbor’s front yard with its parents.  Growing up!  I guess I had just seen a different pair of deer, DINKs (Dual Income No Kids).  We do have a lot of deer around here, as they love to graze on the golf course in the evening.

The Pope

The New York Times had an article on the Pope: Conservative U.S. Catholics Feel Left Out of the Pope’s Embrace.

They were shocked when they saw that Francis said in the interview that “the most serious of the evils” today are “youth unemployment and the loneliness of the old.” It compounded the chagrin after he said in an earlier interview that he had intentionally “not spoken much” about abortion, same-sex marriage or contraception because the church could not be “obsessed with the transmission of a disjointed multitude of doctrines.”1

Imagine the leader of a church following Christ’s doctrine to Love your neighbor as yourself.   (Mark 12:31).  And those Conservatives, control freaks and haters of all who don’t agree with them, shocked by Francis.

College Essays

Becoming bored with the old essay topics for college applications, colleges have added some different topics.  Here’s one:

How should apples and oranges be compared?  Possible answers involve, but are not limited to, statistics, chemistry, physics, linguistics, and philosophy. 2

I spent a long time thinking about that one but mainly came up with recipes.
