Last month, a New York Times poll found that Congress’ approval rating fell to an all-time low of 9 percent.   Meanwhile…”U.S. going communist” received an 11 percent approval rating,

Watch the two video clips here (Senator Michael Bennet explaining this chart, and Jon Stewart, on the “Daily Show” riffing on it):

This morning on the Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me radio program, regarding the Super Committee, Carl Kasell quoted John Hodgman’s idea from the Daily Show:

… balance the budget by changing the Pentagon to a rhombus.

El Tour de Tucson

Great weather today for El Tour, overcast and only supposed to reach 69°.  (This photo from the Web.)

Held annually the Saturday before Thanksgiving, El Tour is a fun ride attracting over 9,000 cyclists of all ages and abilities from throughout the United States and beyond, consisting of novice, intermediate, advanced, and professional riders.  El Tour, “one of the top three fundraising rides” in the country, raised over $1,627,210 in 2010.

The beneficiaries are primarily health-related.  This year’s leading beneficiary is Tu Nidito Children & Family Services.  One year my son rode specifically for a student at his school with childhood arthritis.  I believe that was in 1994 when he received the El Tour Kids Award.

In 1983, the first El Tour included 198 cyclists.  My first year to ride was 1990.  Had my 6-year-old son on the back of my tandem with an extended handlebar and a “kiddie crank”.  Photo here of us in ’91 walking the tandem through the wash, which is now only required of the 111 and 85-mile events.  Note the high kiddie crank.  Daughter behind on her own bike.

Rode the 25 mile+ for five years, the 50 mile+ the next two years.  (El Tour had started with, basically, 100, 75, 50, and 25-mile events.  Today they are 111, 85, 60, and 42-mile.)  Next photo from 1997 when my son was the “captain”, riding on the front of the tandem, and I was the “stoker”.

In 2005 my brother, his son, his best friend, and my son came to town to ride the 100 mile+.  That was the last year we were involved.  I miss it.  The frisson is incredible.

La Tour passes by our gate; it quite a thrill to watch these athletes struggle up Mines Road.

It will be interesting to observe the coming populist purge the congressional and executive branches, of those who plutocrats and nation-builders who so successfully made fools of trusting voters, to corruptly enrich themselves and unconstitutionally cause the war deaths of thousands of Americans, Arabs, and Afghans.

Yes, I suspect it was a part of the Amgen California Tour, because of the large crowd in attendance.
